Full Moon / Sunset Hikes

Sunday, 29 Nov

Tuesday 29 Dec.

Experience the splendour of the great outdoors with magnificent views of the Cape.

Outdoor adventure experts Dirtopia is fully operational from Muratie Wine Estate, just outside Stellenbosch on Knorhoek road off the R44. Their Trail Centre shop is on the singletrack trail head of Simonsberg and the trail team built a brand new hiking trail after the 2020 lockdown. Public can buy a permit to enjoy the sunset view and then walk back with headlamps.

The approximate 3.5km marked circle route through the Muratie forest, is an easy walk with steps to reach the top of the ridge at Gilloolys - a central point with views of Table Mountain in the distance. This is the half way point,  were you can spread your picnic blanket and enjoy Muratie wine served at a mobile station.

The Trail Centre sells Montagu snacks, cooldrinks, snacks like chips & chocolate and energy bars. You may bring your own snacks in a backpack. Remember that everything you carry up, must be carried down by yourself.

A spectacular sunset with stunning views of the winelands and even Table Mountain awaits at the top, while participants can enjoy light snacks Gilloolys, while watch the full moon rise.

Starting from the Trail Centre, it will take approximately 30 minutes to 45min to reach the top. Participants are therefore advised to adhere to the stipulated arrival times, which change every month according to the times of sunset and the rising of the moon.

Torches are needed for walking down (also for sale at Trail Centre) and hikers are encouraged to bring something warm to wear. The cost for the Falke Full Moon Hikes 2020 @ Muratie is R100 for adults and R50 for children under the age of 10. This includes the permit of the marked route (hand-build in 2020, a medic on standby, security on standby, after hours back-up vehicle & staff.)

As the hike takes place in a conservancy, no dogs / pets are allowed.

Advance bookings are advised as space is limited. Bookings for the 2020/2021 season will open soon.

Hikers are allowed to bring their own food to enjoy on top of the mountain. Muratie wines to be sold per glass or per bottle at the top as well!

As the event is normally fully booked (especially on weekends and high season), you will be liable for the cost if anyone in your group do not pitch, as we turn away other keen hikers.

To make the most of your hiking experience, wear comfortable hiking socks and shoes.

The FALKE Advance Performance range of hiking socks is available at the Dirtopia Trail Centre.

All permit holders stand a chance to win a sock hamper from FALKE!

Utilising innovative design and technologies, Advance Performance promises ultimate functionality and wearer advantage, combining over a century of expertise with the most advanced technologies available globally.

If you love the outdoors, try the AH2 Cool or AH4 Wool for a perfect hike. The all-weather cool hiking sock offers a comfort top, strategic cushioning in high strain areas, extra heel and toe reinforcement and advanced wicking and robust lightweight yarns innovation. The left and right ergonomic construction in specific sizes 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 provides the ultimate in wearer comfort and fit.

Advanced Hike 4 (AH4) shares similar properties to the AH2, while the deep plush wool with its rapid moisture absorbency and warming acts as a thermal regulator and provides superior cushioning and protection.  In addition, its special anti-tick and mosquito treatment will keep away insects.

We do not recommend any valuables left in your vehicle, although farm patrol is on standby.

Make sure you join the Full Moon Hike group on Facebook to stay updated on all events and info.

This hiking trail is open 7 days a week with other mountain bike / trail running trails  from the Trail Centre.

Right of admission reserved at all Dirtopia events. The organisers can refuse entry for medical reasons or otherwise at their own discretion.
